What Is Surface Area?

Cube

SA = 6s²

Sphere

SA = 4πr²

Archimedes proved this equals the lateral surface area of a circumscribed cylinder.

Cylinder

SA = 2πr² + 2πrh

This includes both circular ends and the lateral surface.

Cone

SA = πr² + πrl

Where l is the slant height.

Total vs Lateral Surface Area

Total surface area includes all faces. Lateral surface area includes only the side faces, excluding top and bottom. For a cylinder: lateral SA = 2πrh.
